Methodology

How the graph stays trustworthy

Wellspent's value is entirely downstream of how carefully each record is built, sourced, and maintained. The methodology is public and applies to both members and non-members referenced on the discovery surface.

Bright-line fee-only policy

The discovery layer only publishes records for advisors operating under a fee-only compensation model — no commissions, no proprietary-product revenue, no trailing fees. This is verified at intake and re-verified annually.

Source of record

Each canonical advisor record is built from a combination of:

  • Public regulatory filings — ADV Part 2, CRD / IAPD, provincial registrations
  • Credential registries — CFP Board, CFA Institute, STEP, NAEPC, IDFA, NAPFA, XYPN
  • A structured intake conversation with the advisor and firm
  • Publications, teaching, and other verifiable subject-matter output

Items we can't source, we don't publish. Every fact on a record carries a citation.

Structural inclusion

Inclusion on list pages, specialty pages, and location pages is structural — driven by match against a stored query recipe. There is no paid placement, no sponsor slot, and no priced boost. Ordering reflects fit to the query, not willingness to pay.

Refresh cadence

Every canonical record is re-verified annually at minimum. Specialty and geography pages refresh weekly or monthly depending on the recipe. List recipes declare their refresh cadence explicitly.

Corrections

Any advisor — member or not — may request a correction. The review SLA is seven days. Corrections flow back through the citation layer so future ingest reflects the corrected record.
